Coronavirus: Hong Kong health experts warn of possible

Hong Kong health experts have suggested tighter Covid-19 control protocols for the city’s quarantine hotels, warning of possible transmissions between new arrivals in isolation in the wake of the city’s first locally detected case involving a mutant strain of the virus.

Referring to that case, government coronavirus adviser Professor David Hui Shu-cheong, an infectious disease expert at Chinese University, said on Wednesday several S-shaped door hooks used in quarantine hotels to deliver meals – previously suspected of being the means of transmission – had tested negative for Covid-19, leaving the source of the infection still a mystery.

“We can only infer the possibilities for now,” Hui told a radio programme, while also noting that some of the hooks used by the hotel were not submitted to authorities for testing.

Hong Kong marked its first day without a local coronavirus infection in more than two weeks on Wednesday, confirming just one imported case involving a 31-year-old woman who recently arrived from the Philippines. The new infection took the city’s total number of confirmed cases to 11,704, with 209 related deaths. Fewer than five preliminary-positive cases were reported.
